Eating Out & Staying Healthy

Yes, this can be done! While many people look at going out to eat as a way to naturally derail from eating healthy, there are so many great, healthy options in restaurants today. Most restaurants are super about making accommodations based on food allergies, food sensitivities and even different diet protocols. Many restaurants even have the menu items labeled as gluten free, dairy free, vegetarian, etc.

During the summer months, it was comforting to have our restaurants opened for outdoor dining. I love, love outdoor dining!!! It’s also reassuring that restaurants have opened for indoor dining giving us some sense of normal again. Supporting our local and beloved restaurants during this pandemic is hugely important right now. It’s amazing to see the protocols they have in place to keep everyone safe.

If you are trying to stick to healthy lifestyle changes and are heading out to dinner, do not fret. I always approach it as a fun challenge in finding healthy menu items. You do not need to let your guard down because you are going out to a restaurant. And obviously you can’t go into it expecting to eat 100% clean and perfect but do know you have many healthy and nutritious options. Get excited about the challenge!

At the present time, I am running a Clean Eating Reset Challenge Group. I have had a few dinner outings and wanted to share how I managed to work with the menu to stay in line with the challenge. First, since it’s a whole foods approach, there are plenty of items that you can eat – just have to have an open mind.

Above are some photos from my dinner. After perusing the menu, I knew that the salmon dish would stay in line with my needs. This salmon was encrusted with “Love Dust” – their chef’s special seasoning. All herbs from their on premise garden. It was served alongside an arugula and beet salad with a touch of pesto sauce. Absolutely delicious and satiating. I confirmed with the server about this dish being gluten and dairy free. Those almonds on the right were insanely good – also roasted with the same Love Dust seasoning. Someone had ordered a few platters of grilled peaches, homemade ricotta and bread toasts. I took the peaches and had them with my almonds. I also brought a bag of my detox tea and had 2 cups of that with my meal. Here are a few tips to keep in mind for your next restaurant venture:

  • Plan ahead – find a restaurant that has a nice variety of healthy options.
  • Review the menu before heading out the door – will help narrow down your choices.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask the server for modifications – putting sauces & dressings on the side.
  • Usually you can make side substitutions. Trying to cut back on carbs? See about doubling up on veggies instead.
  • Plan on having a cocktail? Make sure you hydrate before that drink with 16 oz. of water and have a 2nd glass of water when done with your cocktail.
  • Slow down your eating – mindful eating can go a long way so you don’t over do it.
  • Watch those portions – you can even have ½ of your meal packed up upon arrival to your table.

My motto is – if there is a will, there is a way. Whenever I go out to eat – I can find a healthy option – there are so many of them. You just have to be in the right mindset to find them and the rest will work out delightfully!

I BELIEVE in you!
