You have heard of it – but what is the deal with Leaky Gut Syndrome? Let’s start off with a fun fact! Did you know that the gut is the biggest immune system organ in your body? Well – yes – it is!

There are many unknowns about Leaky Gut Syndrome. It is not recognized by many doctors as a “diagnosable condition”. That is due to all the unknown factors – so much more research still needs to be done.

Integrative and Holistic Practitioners have determined some standard symptoms to keep an eye out for. They include:

  • Bloating
  • Gas & Cramping
  • Headaches and Join Pain
  • Fatigue
  • Brain Fog / Difficulty Concentrating
  • Skin Issues
  • Nutritional Deficiencies
  • Food Sensitivities

The most identifiable cause is increased intestinal permeability. This is when the tight junctions in the gut (control what passes through the lining of the small intestine) don’t work properly. This could let substances leak into the bloodstream.

Confirmed As “What They Do Know”:

  • The above cause has been found to be the case with both Celiac’s disease and Crohn’s Disease. There are theories out there regarding other autoimmune conditions having a relationship with LGS but this has not been confirmed as of yet. What is believed? There has been insight on the gut microbiota triggering the body’s immune response. This occurring can contribute to several autoimmune health conditions such as:
    • IBS | Celiac | Crohn’s | Diabetes | and possibly others

Scientists have also been studying/investigating the gut-brain relationship between the GI tract and the brain. This may contribute to mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression. Do take note that more research needs to be done.

Since doctors and scientists have yet to determine exact causes of LGS – they have outlined some underlying risk factors:

  • Poor Nutrition | Alcohol | Stress | Infections | Autoimmune Disorders | Diabetes

What about treatments? Well – since it’s not considered an actual medical condition there are no standard treatments. BUT……. Diet & lifestyle changes can help improve this condition. Here are some excellent suggestions:

  • Eating more probiotic foods boosting beneficial gut bacteria.
  • Eating foods rich in prebiotics – such as veggies and whole grains.
  • Eat less meat, dairy and eggs.
  • Avoid added sugar & artificial sweeteners.
  • Start a consistent exercise routine.
  • Get enough sleep consistently each night – set a solid circadian rhythm.
  • Reduce stress.
  • Avoid unnecessary antibiotics.
  • Quit Smoking!

We seem to have plenty of evidence to support the existence of Leak Gut Syndrome. We just need scientists to uncover how leaky gut contributes to the progression of diseases.
