What does Breakfast and Intermittent Fasting have in COMMON?

All you keep hearing in the news is what celebrity practices Intermittent Fasting and how it’s making them look and feel younger than ever. Yes – Jennifer Aniston does it and how is she 50? Have you tried Intermittent Fasting yourself or worried about not being able to go 16 hours without eating? Well read on for some information about intermittent fasting and then determine if it’s the right fit for your lifestyle and health.

Oh yes and here’s what breakfast and intermittent fasting have in common. When you break your FAST – you are having breakfast – get it? So intermittent fasting is that time from your last meal until having breakfast – essentially breaking your fast. Glad I cleared that up for you! 😊

There are definite benefits to intermittent fasting.

  1. It has anti-aging benefits. During the fasting period, your cells start a waste removal process – called autophagy. The is where the cells break down and metabolizes the bad stuff that has acquired over time. When the body can rid itself of this cell waste it helps diminish cell damage and reduces the effects of aging. And this could be why Jennifer Aniston looks 30, not 50.
  2. Improves blood sugar. Through some studies, intermittent fasting has been known to keep blood sugar levels well regulated – helping prevent spikes and crashes.
  3. Keeps your heart healthy. It has been shown to lower certain heart disease risk factors. It has also played into cholesterol levels – increasing the good HDL cholesterol and decreasing both bad LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
  4. Great for Brain Health. Studies have show intermittent fasting to help improve cognitive function, help memory, and the ability to learn new information. It has also been shown to help with slowing down brain aging. Research has also shown how IF may help slow progression of neurodegenerative diseases – such as Alzheimer’s.
  5. Reduces Inflammation. Promising studies have been done showing a reduction in inflammatory markers. This was especially the case for nighttime fasting. Nice to know that it can help reduce inflammation and chronic disease.
  6. Weight Loss? It has been proven effective for weight loss but here is my opinion. It is healthy if you eat a whole foods plentiful diet limiting processed foods, sugar, hydrogenated fats, alcohol and other inflammatory foods. Our bodies still need those nutrient dense foods to optimize our body at full capacity. Just so I am clear – it’s not ok to have McDonald’s 3 times a day while Intermittent Fasting!
    – My recommendation as well – Big breakfast, medium lunch, small dinner.

How to Start? Start with a 12 Hour Fast – most manageable and realistic. I would not start out of the gate with a 16 hour fast. I also recommend speaking with your doctor about pursuing this type of diet. Everyone has unique health issues and it should be really addressed with your doctor before starting.

What I do – I have been aiming for a 12 hour fast. My goal is to be done eating by 7:00 PM. In the morning I start my day with a warm lemon water and then have my first cup of coffee around 7:00/7:30 AM. The weekends are harder to make this stick but I feel it’s working when I can do this at least 4-5 days a week. I also feel it’s contributing to better quality sleep. Yay sleep!

I would love to hear your comments about intermittent fasting and what has worked for you.
