Just Relax and Be Happy

What’s the difference between anxiety and depression? It does seem like the two get intermingled yet are very different animals. I have been dealing with anxiety for a good portion of my adult life. I can recall my initial bought of anxiety when taking my first job after graduating college. Always one aiming to please, I wanted to be an expert before even starting a new job – all the unknowns, not being perfect ate away at me. I remember vividly driving to work each morning worried about how my day would go and how I would handle all the unknowns. How will I approach the situation and what if I do something wrong? It would just keep cycling over and over in my head. And I could NOT shut it down. Always making a bigger deal (over-exaggerating) the situation. Can anyone relate????

Anxiety has come in and out of my life since then and I have found ways to treat it naturally. Although sometimes it can be worse than others. I am confident that it is in fact anxiety and not depression for me – it’s more about my mind constantly racing, in the can’t “shut it down mode”.  And the ironic part is when people are with me (aside from my family), they would never detect this. I come across pretty calm and centered. I would in fact say that I am calm and centered yet can’t shut down the running to do list in my head, worries over things I truly can’t control and wanting to accomplish more than is humanly possible – especially for someone who is trying to manage a chronic health condition. One of the bigger problems with anxiety is sleep disruption. Once this starts happening more frequently, everything starts falling apart like dominos. First, it’s the sleep, then it’s the lack of focus/productivity, leading into irritability, bad food decisions and then declining health. And that is why I know “I MUST” get a handle on it.

Why am I sharing this? Because I know I am not the only one and if there is just one person out there reading this, I pray it helps them. Having someone to relate to when dealing with issues like this helps tremendously.

Why did I name this blog – “Just Relax and Be Happy”? Well that’s the irony of it. Those that have not encountered depression or anxiety do not understand the depth of these issues. It’s not as easy as shaking it off and all of sudden becoming relaxed and/or happy. For those that can not relate, do not understand the complexity of mental illness. It’s not an easy process to overcome or get through. My approach has been holistic thus far, helping coax me through it.

Here are some great ways to naturally treat these 2 conditions. Check out this list below:

  1. Exercise
  2. Meditation
  3. Yoga
  4. Massage / Facials
  5. Pursuing a Hobby
  6. Staying Social
  7. Natural Vitamin D Exposure / D3 Supplements
  8. CBD Oil
  9. Supplements: Magnesium / Omega 3 Fatty Acids (like Fish Oil or MCT Oil) / Turmeric
  10. Diet: Whole Foods – Leafy Green Vegetables / Blueberries / Cashews / Lemons / Dark Chocolate / Avocados / Walnuts / Mushrooms
  11. Food to Avoid: Sugar / Caffeine / Alcohol / Candy / Processed Foods

For those that have tried all of the above without success, your next step – visit your doctor. As I do encourage others to pursue a holistic approach to their health, that should never supersede the direction of your doctor. Together you can come up with a plan to treat your condition.
