Prevalence of Food Sensitivity & Determining If You Have One

Food sensitivity is definitely more of a hot topic in the health world today. More and more people are encountering food sensitivity signs and are wanting to get answers on why. There is such a huge range of signs and reactions when it comes to food sensitivities. They are not pleasant and can be very disruptive to daily life routines. Most of the issues are just downright annoying and frustrating to deal with on a regular basis. Trust me, I know and have dealt with my fair share of them!

There are three categories of diet induced food sensitivity.

1). Food Allergy – straight up food allergies affect 4-6% of the population.

2). Autoimmune diet induced food sensitivity – affects 3-5% of the population.

3). General food sensitivity – affects 30-40% of the population.

Here is the challenge – there is still so much unknown information about them especially amongst conventional doctors. It is actually one of the most under-addressed areas of conventional medicine. Due to there being so many different reactions and variables, there lacks solid studies and research being done. It can take up to 48 – 72 hours for your body to have a “food sensitivity” reaction – that’s a long time. Especially considering all the foods that you are ingesting over a 72 hour period. It can get tricky pretty fast on pinpointing the exact food causing you an issue. The more frustrating news (sorry to break it to you!) – some of our lovely anti-inflammatory foods (think salmon, blueberries, turmeric, ginger) can be the culprit as well. UGH!!!

I am sure you are seeing the advertisements – been blowing up in my newsfeed – on food sensitivity test kits. You can order them online now. EverlyWell, Top3DNA and CheckMyBodyHealth seem to be the most prevalent ones out there. I am tempted to try one out at some point but would love feedback from anyone that has tried them first. More to follow down line on this.

To compact the issue with food sensitivity, it can actually play a secondary role in some larger medical conditions. This includes a wider variety of health conditions in the following categories:

Gastrointestinal – IBS | Crohn’s | Ulcerative Colitis | Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome

Neurological – Migraine | ADD/ADHD | Epilepsy | Depression | Insomnia | Restless Leg Syndrome

Musculoskeletal – Fibromyalgia | Inflammatory Arthritis

Dermatological – Atopic Dermatitis | Psoriasis

Endocrine – Obesity

What about Immunologic Complexities? – Say What?

I am sure you have heard of Celiac Disease – one of the more commonly known food sensitivity conditions – Actual Allergy. This is in fact an autoimmune condition. Yet now there is a newer form of diet-induced inflammation called “non-celiac gluten sensitivity” or simply known as Gluten Sensitivity. Gluten Sensitivity is 6-8 times more prevalent than Celiac Disease. Here’s the thing with gluten – the protein found in wheat. The body cannot breakdown this protein – it’s scientifically impossible. The amino acid structures are locked into each other so that your body can not break it down and digest it like other foods. Some people’s body have no reaction to this process while others are exhibiting “food sensitivity” signs. It comes down to how vulnerable you are. If you already have another underlying health condition, you are more likely to have a gluten sensitivity.

What type of signs should you be looking for? Check out this list:

  • Fatigue
  • Brain Fog / Difficulty Concentrating
  • Joint Pain
  • Headaches or Migraines
  • Eczema
  • Stomach Aches
  • Bloating
  • Acid Reflux
  • Constipation or Diarrhea
  • Unexplained Weight Gain or Loss

Another important point of information – the reaction to gluten sensitivity manifests mostly in the brain. Hence the above symptoms – fatigue/brain fog/difficulty concentrating/migraines, etc.

73% of celiac patients have a lack of blood flow to the brain – called Hypoperfusion. This causes the brain to not work well. Symptoms are dependent on the location of the brain being affected.

Many tout “Gluten Free” to be a trend but it truly is a MOVEMENT and becoming more of the norm. One issue, which would be an entirely other newsletter topic, is the quality of processed GF foods. You still have to watch out for ingredients in these items – they are not all good for you and typically are calorie dense. Whole foods are the way to go!

My recommendation would be to try an elimination diet to truly evaluate how your body reacts when reintroducing suspected foods. NOT GOING TO LIE! It involves planning and preparation but offers fantastic results providing real answers to your own specific reactions. From there, you can make the decision about removing inflammation for the long-term.

I offer a program for this and am running a Clean Eating Challenge group after Memorial Day. You should contact me if interested and I will send you the information. For an overview, you can check it out here. Covid discount will be applied.
