2020 is not quite over yet! Although I would say, we all could agree that it’s been the worst year ever. I could go on and on about why but let’s not focus on the negatives? We can look at some of the many amazing ways we can still take charge of our health to get on track for the long-term. We can tune in a bit to the silver linings this year has brought forth to us. You may need to dig a little deep here, but I bet you can find something! I am not just talking food here – there are so many elements to being healthy and food is just really one component of it.

Component 1: Social Media and Phones

Let’s start with social media management in our lives – the phones that we are all addicted to. Why can’t we put them down? Well back to my first statement in this paragraph – the addiction is real my friends. And it takes a toll on our minds and body’s. Looking back 4 years ago – in 2016, I was on social media quite a bit promoting a health product and was loving it. That all changed as the election came closer. The way that people were treating each other was a complete turn off to me, so I took a 2 year hiatus from Facebook.

I would say it’s completely healthy to take a step away from social media. Consider a tech detox. You can hop on but consider setting a timer, so you don’t get sucked into the time warp of it all. It really is a time killer. It’s fine to be on there but be mindful of how much time you are truly spending in this space. You will be amazed of the time you regain!

And yes, a big portion of my business is run through social media, but I would never promote being on it to the point of making your self not well. Moderation guys – all in moderation!

Component 2: Food Factor

I always promote organic, whole foods nutrition. I like to say I am on an 85%/15% or even 90%/10% plan – majority of the time eating all whole foods, nutrient dense diet vs. the other options. Such as the occasional sweet treat or glass of wine.

You are truly only doing your body good by making great eating choices. It helps get your body ready and prepared to fight off illness – boosting your immune system. If you are unable to get all those veggies, fruits, lean proteins in via diet there is the supplement option. If you turn on the news – you will hear most doctor recommendations of Vitamin D, Zinc and Vitamin C as the main ones. I am not a doctor obviously but pointing out what has been recommended by doctors.

Component 3: Movement Factor

The beauty of movement is that it’s not only good for your body, but it does wonders for your brain, mood, and overall mental health. Sold! And I can say that from personal experience, exercise makes me a better person to be around. It’s an amazing release and a top form of self-care in my book. Figure out a way to get moving consistently and you will experience improvements on so many wonderful levels of your life.

Component 4: Self-Care and Stress Factor

I can say with confidence that each and every person out there is stressed out to some level due to this pandemic. Funny looking back when this all started back in March.

We were under the assumption this would only last a few weeks. But when you look at history, when has a pandemic ever lasted just 2 weeks? I am thinking never. So here we are – almost mid-October – close to 7 months in. Yikes!

It’s never been more important to build in some self-care. We need to be nurturing and nourishing our body’s and minds more so than ever. I struggle with the “relaxation factor” but am trying really hard to get some in mid-day and at the end of my day.

Component 5: Sleep Factor

It’s more and more common to hear these days about so many suffering with insomnia and chronic sleep issues. Our bodies need quality sleep to function at its optimum capacity. Lack of sleep can literally take years off your life. I know, not what anyone wants to hear. Some tips that can help make a difference:

  • Create a consistent wake up time and bedtime – every single day.
  • Make sure your bedroom is dark.
  • Shut down all electronic devices if still in your bedroom.
  • Declutter your bedroom space – make it a place of serenity and calm.
  • No caffeine past 1:00 PM.
  • Meditation
