It happens to us all! We start out with the best of intentions and then – we come across an obstacle, go off course and have a tough time getting back on track. Living a healthy lifestyle by eating nutrient dense foods and getting regular exercise does not have to be hard. It’s having the determination to work through situations and making the best of them – resulting in forever lasting lifestyle habits. Here I have listed out some typical diet challenges that we (yes, me too!!!) come across when trying to establish a healthier way of eating. And if there is a will, there is a way to overcoming them!
Before starting on the list – my biggest suggestion to you is cooking from home as much as possible. You may have this down pat after dealing with our Stay at Home Order. Why cook at home?
- You know what you are eating – ingredients tend to be in wholesome form!
- You and your family have more of an appreciation for a homecooked meal – making it fun and appealing to the entire family.
- The meal will likely be less calorie dense to eating out or ordering take-out.
- Think of the calories you will burn simply by preparing your meal! 😊
Let’s Overcome Some Typical Diet Challenges!
- Issue: You have amazing willpower on day 1 – doing light and healthy meals for both breakfast and lunch. Heck, you even got a workout in but by dinner, you are famished and completely sabotage by overeating and making poor food choices.
Solution: Assess the amount of protein you had in both breakfast and lunch. If you have a smoothie for breakfast, add a vegan protein source: Chia | Hemp Seeds | Flax Seeds | Moringa Powder | etc. An unsweetened nut butter is another great option. For lunch, add a lean protein such as organic chicken breast, wild salmon, nuts or legumes. These proteins will help keep you satiated for hours so that you are not famished once dinner time arrives. - Issue: You feel hungry all the time.
Solution: Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. We confuse hunger with thirst. Start your morning with 12-16 oz of warm lemon water. Or just go for a straight up pint of clean, pure water. Your body needs the replenish what it lost during the night. When feeling hungry, have a glass of water and then assess if you are still hungry. Recommended daily amount of water is ½ your body weight in ounces of water per day. - Issue: You have NO time to cook.
Solution: Having a plan makes all the difference. When we can plan ahead of time, it makes all the difference. It literally takes away that lingering question , “what’s for dinner tonight?” Menu plan – one week ahead and you are way more likely to stick to healthy eating. Use a simple calendar to come up with your dinners, prep over the weekends by making a protein source and roasted veggies to integrate into meals throughout the week. - Issue: Can’t stop snacking while preparing dinner?
Solution: Go ahead and snack BUT snack on the right foods. Cut up some cucumbers, carrots, peppers and portion out some salsa or hummus. You can snack when it’s the right foods! - Issue: Your family is too picky and will not agree on one meal.
Solution: You are not alone! Customize your meal, you don’t have to make multiple separate ones! If you’re preparing fried rice, separate it. You can add peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, beef, or chicken and so much more to satisfy you and your family. - Issue: Eating healthy is expensive.
Solution: Personally, I try my best to find the healthiest and freshest food I can at the most reasonable price possible. Some stores that carry inexpensive high quality organic foods are Aldi and Wegmans. Some of the most expensive organic foods are the meat products. Try cutting out meat for a week and see how much money you save. - Issue: Sugar cravings are through the roof!
Solution: Sugar is highly addictive but I have a lot of fun substitutes for you! Instead of processed cereal; a sweet parfait of organic maple granola, coconut yogurt and blueberries is a great healthy breakfast. Some snacks you can have are apples or bananas spread with peanut butter, a chocolate pumpkin seed cranberry trailmix, and so much more! - Issue: Reducing calorie dense items.
Solution: Measuring and observing your portions before you eat them is very important. Some calorie dense items that are very important to measure include nut butters, oils (olive, coconut and avocado oils are a great substitute for canola and vegetable oil) and cheese. Cut back on large portions of these foods. It will help you tremendously!
You are strong and more than capable of succeeding.
- Stay strong cleaning up your diet! You’ve completed tasks and succeeded hundreds of times in the past in so many various situations. Eating healthy will benefit you in so many ways, and will help you succeed even more in the future.
