Intermittent Fasting – is it a dieting fad or here to stay? I have to admit, I was very skeptical about the entire concept when I first heard about it. As soon as I heard the word “fasting”, I was not sold on the concept. But then I realized that I was almost naturally doing this anyway. I tend to eat a later breakfast between 10:00 & 11:00 AM and try to be done eating by 7:00 PM (10 months of the year) – Summer is a little tricky for me. You can say my natural eating window timeframe is between 8-9 hours. 15-16 hour fasting period. Guess you can say, I am in!

The most intriguing part for me is the results being shown in aiding the reduction of inflammation. Many of our traditional eating habits in our culture such as eating continuously all day long is actually causing inflammation. The fact of the matter is this (and one no one wants to hear this) – we don’t need to be eating as much as we do. Our society and culture have programmed us to eat all day long. Should we be eating 3 meals per day? Yes – absolutely. Is it ok to eat 2 meals a day? Yes – absolutely. Each individual is different. If you have someone such as a body builder trying to build muscle – they will for certain need to consume the necessary amount of calories and protein to create those results. If you have a pregnant woman carrying life inside of her, she will need to increase her calories since eating for two. But for the rest of us, well that just isn’t the case. Look, I know, easier said than done. Habits are hard to break but it can be done!

Getting back onto the Intermittent Fasting – eating in a shorter window on a daily basis helps reduce inflammation in your body. Quick biology for you: Monocytes in the blood are those cells that cause inflammation. Research has shown that those individuals practicing intermittent fasting on a regular basis have less of these cells in their blood compared to those NOT practicing intermittent fasting.

Other benefits to Intermittent Fasting:

  1. Weight Loss – this is what IF is known for, right? If you are practicing the 16:8 rule – you are likely eating less, no late night snacking which leads to better digestion, sleep, etc.
  2. Fewer Blood Sugar Spikes – when going longer periods without eating it sends the body into fat burning mode and helps limit blood sugar spikes.
  3. Appetite is More Controlled – being on a more set schedule helps control hunger. It helps to lower the hunger hormone called ghrelin. Love this!
  4. Better Skin – they say it is anti-aging and can reverse the aging process. That makes me sold! In our daily lives we are exposed to free radicals that can damage our skin. Fasting can help make our cells more resilient – keeping skin more clear and smoother/firmer.
  5. Fights Fatty Liver – it signals the production of proteins that control the livers absorption of fatty acids – preventing excess fat from going there.
  6. Improved Cognitive Function – As we age, we are steadily declining in this area. Fasting can actually provide new brain cell growth, aids with cognitive function and become a mood booster. Yes!
  7. Increased Lean Muscle Mass – since on most diets you tend to lose muscle mass, IF does exactly the opposite since you are burning more fat and lose less muscle.
  8. Improved Heart Health – it can lower levels of bad cholesterol by up to 32% and triglycerides up to 42% providing a positive impact on blood pressure.
  9. Belly Fat Loss – 12-14 hour daily fasting periods can shift your body from burning glucose for energy to burning fat. Hello and goodbye stubborn belly fat!
  10. Improved Pancreas Function – by fasting your body becomes more sensitive to insulin, so you need less of it. This helps stabilize blood sugar levels protecting against type 2 diabetes.

These are some pretty hefty benefits! And now I am sure you can see why this is a concept that will be sticking around for quite some time. 😊
