Yay to the 10th Free Coaching Friday session! Time sure does fly – even when we are dealing with a pandemic. This week’s session was about approaching our summer while still dealing with the Corona Virus.

We will have to take some things into consideration this summer when it comes to the virus. Firstly, we are dealing with a bit of a meat shortage. There are ways to source protein other than by eating meat. Taking a break from meat, can actually improve your health. Or at least reducing the amount of meat you eat – so don’t fret!

Here are some great alternative sources to meat.

  • Greek Yogurt (recommend unsweetened)
  • Eggs – Veggie Omelet
  • Chia Seeds – Chia Pudding
  • Hemp Seeds – Sprinkle on top of salad
  • Flax Seeds – Add to your smoothie
  • Nuts – Walnuts / Almonds / Cashews
    • Nut butters: organic peanut butter / almond butter / cashew butter
  • Seeds – Pumpkin Seeds / Sunflower Seeds
  • Beans – Black / Garbanzo Beans / Northern / Cannellini / Split Peas / Lentils
  • Vegetables – Brussel Sprouts / Asparagus / Broccoli / Peas / Spinach / Kale
  • Grains – Quinoa / Oatmeal / Wild Rice / Buckwheat / Kamut

The State of our Emotional Eating has been impacted harshly. How many people have you heard say, they have put on the Covid 15? It’s a real thing – we are all going through this together and for emotional eaters, this is an extremely difficult time. There is a prevalence of food around 24/7 – being home quarantined – it’s there enticing us all day long. For the past 3 months we have been on an emotional roller coaster. One day, feeling down and out and the next day, feeling like we can conquer the world – that a sense of normal is starting to happen. Food is a comfort to most people and right now most people are using it to cope with this pandemic. For emotional eaters, this is intensified and are being deeply impacted. And just because I am a Health Coach does not put me in the perfect category. I have had life-long struggles with food. During this crisis, my comfort “go to” foods have been non-dairy latte’s (with coconut sugar), banana bread (even though I make a healthier version, sugar is sugar!) and non-dairy ice cream. I am now cleaning this up with a whole foods cleanse that is helping immensely to get off the sugar roller coaster.

The other issue many are encountering – increased rate of alcohol consumption. Every time I drive by a liquor store, the parking lot is packed with a flurry of people going in and out. People are coping with anxiety, stress, depression, loneliness, and boredom. Taking into consideration the emotional aspect along with more freedom built into the day, it creates the perfect storm for more alcohol to be consumed. And alcohol consumption leads into altered decisions, unhealthy food choices and ultimately an unhealthy lifestyle.

Emotional eating has been termed – “Pandemic Eating” during the Coronavirus crisis. If you take a step back and look at how we approach food, emotional eating makes logical sense.

  • It’s very accessible to most people.
  • It’s the fastest mood altering & accessible “drug” for most people.
  • Provides that temporary comfort/high
  • Soothes all of the emotions we are currently experiencing

Tips to Overcome Emotional/Pandemic Eating:

  1. Don’t put pressure on yourself to be perfect!
    1. Embrace your imperfections while staying mindful of healthy food choices.
    2. Aim to eat healthy 80% of the time.
  2. Don’t GUILT yourself over the other 20%.
  3. Having a structure/schedule each day helps you to stay on point with better, healthier choices.
  4. Pursue your hobbies, enjoy your favorite activities, get outdoors and back to basics – super soothing for the soul!
  5. Stay focused on unrelated food activities.
  6. Take advantage of the warmer weather – plan a day trip somewhere. Create mini trips or projects to keep you busy and genuinely happy/satisfied.
    1. Getting outdoors and absorbing some natural Vitamin D, is a natural mood booster.
  7. How about some mindful eating? Be aware of your food triggers – those things that lead you to overeating and binging on food. Set yourself up for success eliminating the temptation.
  8. If you find that your symptoms are unmanageable for you – contact your doctor and let your family or a friend know what’s going on. Right now, we need to lean on each other for support!
