Focusing on our mental health during this pandemic should be at the top of our list. Our mental health hugely plays into our overall health. Remember back in March when I had a free coaching session about stress management? Every day our worlds are evolving, being directly impacted with all that is happening. Every day is different with highs and lows and not many in between. It takes a toll on the soul! We need to take a step back from all of the overwhelming news with this pandemic and start nurturing ourselves.

I am one who is always aiming to accomplish too many tasks – with an overflowing plate. And when I can’t get it “all” done, I get frustrated with myself and end up being less productive.  Maybe you can relate?

As of late, I have been letting certain things go and have to say, it’s been a better life experience. If I can’t get everything done on my to do list, I am easier on myself. I have also allowed myself to walk away and just go out and enjoy life. The pressure we all put on ourselves is exactly that – self-inflicted pressure. Why do we do it? Maybe it’s the desire/need for perfection. Well, let me tell you, there is no perfection happening with anyone. I am not saying give up on life or your goals of being successful. What I am saying is – this life we have been granted is short and we need to be enjoying it more.

Here is how I feel like my journey has gone. And this is especially the case after having kids. Pre-pandemic, I felt like I was running a race and at an unsustainable pace. Honestly could not keep up between the kid’s schedule, working 2 jobs, managing a household and trying to stay on top of my own multiple sclerosis. Then the Coronavirus arrived and the shift began.

The new stressors arrived – there was trying to keep the kids on a consistent schedule with school and following all their assignments, managing the kids screen time, staying tuned in to their mental health with the isolation, dealing with my fear of going to the grocery store (the fear was real and much better now). My husband was a trooper getting what I needed on my very specific and hard to find grocery items. Listening to the news was draining (and still is) and then the countdown to Summer began. Summer at the beach has been great for the soul and I have really stepped back in many ways. And now that the 1st week of August is here, the new stressors are creeping in. Back to school on a remote plan is less than ideal. I understand why, but know it’s not going to be easy. I worry about my kids as I know all you parents out there feel me on this.

Why am I sharing my personal experiences with all of this? Because I know you can relate and I don’t want you to feel alone. We are all being impacted by this worldwide crisis. We need to be supporting each other more than ever. Here are some tips to keep in mind, to put you front and center so that you can be the best version of yourself for everyone around you.

  1. Be Kind – sounds simple right? I have witnessed 2 extremes of people’s behavior during the pandemic. In our best selves – I have seen amazing kindness and appreciation for others. And then I have also seen the disrespect and disregard for humanity. The gesture of being kind to others – treating them as you want to be treated goes a long way. It’s received well for the giver and the receiver. It’s soothing to the soul when we do good for others. Maybe you have been short with your family, getting frustrated with too much time together? It could just be me? LOL – It’s hard work and I am making more of a conscious effort to take a deep breath before reacting to situations.
  2. Make Sure YOUR Pitcher is Full – before taking care of everyone else in your family, you need to make sure you have everything you need to make that happen. So be sure your water pitcher is full before pouring out to everyone else. You can not pour from an empty pitcher!
  3. Self-Care – This is filling your pitcher. Everyone has their own form of personal self-care. What gives you that state of calm? Is it reading, yoga, running, walking, connecting with friends, crafting, home projects, gardening, meditation? Find that thing that makes you happy and just do it! And be sure to schedule it in on a regular basis. You will be a better person to be around.
  4. Be Easy on Yourself – Try not to create such a long and unattainable to-do list. Or if you can’t get everything done on your list, find comfort in knowing – “there is always tomorrow”. Here is your opportunity to end the pressure to be perfect.
  5. Enjoy The Moment – Try and remember that we are all going through a worldwide crisis. One take-away from this experience is the appreciation for how precious life and our health truly are. Embrace all the good that life still has to offer. Stop what you are doing, look outside and reflect on the beauty around you. Soak it in!
